Following the latest Jeremy Clarkson-related outrage, the issue of “racist words” has been pushed to the national media foreground once again. Yesterday, I took part in a discussion on a BBC Midlands radio station talking about whether certain words should be banned and legislated against. I think you can guess what my position was going to be, and I thought it was a pretty sensible position to take. To go down the route of censorship would be shackling artists, writers and performers.
On the opposing side you had a spokesman from the Unite Against Fascism group, who took the wonderfully schizophrenic view that “in a free and democratic society” certain words should be banned(!) The discussion is about 20 minutes long and I come in about 7 minutes from the start, but please do listen through the first section so can enjoy the UAF representative contradicting herself, yet remaining oblivious to it.
